History of Fernvale Sengkang
Fernvale is a new neighborhood situated in Sengkang New Town, North-East part of Singapore. Sengkang lies between the Yio Chu Kang, Punggol, and Seletar. Sengkang town is divided into 7 subzones, and Fernvale is one of them. Others include Lorong Halus North, Sengkang West, Sengkang Town Centre, Anchorvale, Compassvale, and Rivervale.
Fernvale being part of Sengkang shares history. A road in the area named Lorong Sengkang inspired the name Sengkang. The area now Sengkang was once home to plantations. Crops such as pepper, rubber, and pineapple were dominant in this region. It was also home to a fishing village called Kengkar, which refers to the “foot of the port.”
Before 1994, Punggol was home to the majority of the public housing in the area. The Housing Board later started developing a new residential town that came to be Sengkang. The areas’ subtle nods to houses on slits and the seafaring past were incorporated in the neighborhood’s HDB developments.
Today, Fernvale features modern developments and new infrastructure. Connectivity in the area has improved and is set to become even better once Sengkang LRT Line begins operations. It is along the North-East Line and connects the area to the rest of Singapore through Sengkang MRT station. Sengkang bus interchange is the main transport node in Sengkang. It connects Fernvale and the neighboring areas to Sengkang MRT station.
Fernvale also features great shopping destinations. Seletar Mall and Greenwich V are among the main entertainment and retail centers. The malls offer plenty of services and goods from leading brands.
Other outstanding amenities in the area include Seletar Aerospace Park and Sengkang Sports and Recreation Centre. The industrial park is a major attraction and also home to trendy F&B businesses. Residents love the park for its beautiful green spaces and family-friendly facilities.
